Free Pattern: Garter Snake Scarf

As promised, here is the finished garter snake scarf, with pattern so you can make your own!

Finished Measurements

Width: 4.5 inches
Length: 40 inches (variable)

Materials

Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Solid in Sage Green (~120 yds)
Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Solid in Hot Green (~120 yds)
Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Solid in Red (small amount)
Size US7 needles
2 black buttons
Tapestry needle
Needle and thread

Gauge

17 sts/32 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch

Pattern notes

Work the pattern with two colors at once, using each color to complete 2 rows before switching. The colors get carried up the side of the scarf and are hardly noticeable. (So, R1 and R2 worked in hot green, R3 and R4 worked in sage green, etc.)

Also, button eyes are probably not best for very small children. Embroidering on eyes with black yarn is probably a better choice if choking could be a concern.

Pattern

CO 2 sts
R1: K
R2-R20: k1fb, k to end

Work in garter stitch to 32 inches or desired length

Head Shaping:
R1-R8: k to end, CO 2
R8-R14: k all sts
R14: k to last 2 sts, k2tog
Repeat R14 until only 2 sts remain
BO 2 sts. Weave in ends.

Cut 6 lengths of red yarn ~15 inches long. Thread through a tapestry needle and though the bind of row. Pull yarn through until it is doubled. Holding two strands together, braid yarn for ~1.5 inches. Separate strands and make 2 braids ~2 inches long of 3 strands each to create the fork in the snake’s tongue. Knot and cut ends.

Attach button eyes.

Wow – love it. He is really cute. My son would probably appreciate me making him something – and I think that may well be what I make

Hi, there is a group of us Ravelry people getting ready to do this snake as a KAL. The group is called Christmas 2009 Monthly Make Ahead. http://www.ravelry.com/groups/christmas-2009-monthly-make-ahead

Anyhoo, I am so very new to knitting and I have a question. Why did you use the K1fb increase in the tail and then CO increase in the head of this pattern? I was just wondering. I had to ask was K1fb was and found a video to do that. LOL

    Thanks bunches for your help.
